I was lucky enough to see Gregory Porter at the Theater at Ace Hotel on December 6, 2017. He was not only everything I expected him to sound like life but he actually melted my heart more than once during the night. He was such a great storyteller and super engaging to listen to and to watch.

The most outstanding story of the evening, in my opinion, was told before his song "Take Me to the Alley." He told us about how his mom, who was a nurse, would spend all day helping others. None the less she somehow had the time and energy to continue her aid on her own time.

Once she saw a pregnant woman walking down Normandie and Jefferson in South LA. Without thinking, she stopped her car, jumped out and offered the woman a ride home.

Another instance while Gregory's mom was driving, she noticed a homeless man, picked him up, brought him home and made him a meal.

I just kept thinking,"wow, she sounds like such an amazing human being. I'd would have liked to have known her." The story ends and the band so gracefully breaks into "Take Me to the Alley" and there I was, in tears, the whole of Gregory's performance of that song.

Although he never performed "Be Good", one of my faves, he did sing a lot of his great tracks, including his cover of Nature Boy, which he did in such a splendid way. This was an unforgettable evening.
